Brief Profile of the Centre
Under the UGC's 11th Plan guidelines, the Centre for Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy was established at Tripura University in April, 2008. To make Indian society truly egalitarian, the institution of higher learning needs to address the issue of social exclusion and inclusion.The primary space where ‘Exclusion’ can be studied, understood and first transcended is the University, which can and must act as a beacon for society. The UGC has therefore decided to support research on the issue of social exclusion, which has theoretical as well as policy importance. Such research primarily focuses on the nature, causes, and consequences of social exclusion affecting disadvantaged and marginalized sections of society, to generate knowledge that informs inclusive policies and social justice.The idea is to establish a teaching-cum-research Centre in Tripura University to pursue this noble cause.
Functions of the Centre as per UGC Guidelines
- Teaching courses at the M.A. and M.Phil levels, leading eventually to full-fledged M.Phil and even M.A. programme in Social Exclusion Studies
- Undertaking M.Phil. & Ph. D. supervision
- Collecting information on Social Exclusion and building up a database
- Carrying out detailed analyses based on the socio-economic data generated by government agencies
- Organizing regular conferences, seminars and symposia on the theme of Social Exclusion
- Publishing regularly the research findings of the Faculty and Students
- Organizing public lectures on the subject by eminent scholars
- Reaching out to scholars, especially young scholars, in other universities and colleges through an active program of inviting Visiting Faculty
- Establishing links with Civil Society Organizations engaged in combating Social Exclusion.
Vision of the centre
The vision of this teaching-cum-research Centre is to make the people acquainted with the Indian constitutional objectives. The Centre is working for developing the understanding of the nature, extent, and forms of social exclusion discriminations at an empirical level and formulating policies for protecting the rights of marginalized section people. .
Major achievements
- Pioneer in introducing PG Diploma Course on Tribal & Ethnic studies in NE India
- The Centre has completed 21 Nos. major and minor research projects amounting to a total of Rs. 1,00,89,300 (One Crore eighty-nine thousand three hundred only)
- The Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Government of India has included the CSSEIP, TU in the list of Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Tribal Research in 2024
- The two NAAC reports (2015 & 2022) highlighted and appreciated the activities of the Centre and included it in the best practice category
- Total Publications: Book: 07, Book Chapter: 14, Paper in journals: 45 (UGC Care listed/Springer/EPW/Agronomy/National/International/Peer Review)
