Brief Profile of the Department

The Department of Bengali was established in 1977 in the erstwhile Post Graduate Centre of University of Calcutta. In 1987, it was integrated part of the Faculty of Arts & Commerce when Tripura University was established.
New Syllabus (according to NEP 2020) has been introduced from the session 2024.
Many alumni of our Department are currently prominent educationists, poets, writers, politicians and working in different colleges and universities in all over India.
Our department has made a significant contribution to the study and practice of Bengali language in North-East India

  • Pre Modern & Modern Literature & Language.
  • Historical & Socio Cultural background of Bengali Literature.
  • Bengali Literature of North East India & Bangladesh.
  • Historical, Cultural&pixel Socio-economic background of Bengali Literature in Tripura.
  • Modern Bengali Literature: Novel, Short-Stories, Poetry, Drama.
  • Tagore Literature
  • Gender Studies
  • Folk Studies.

Special Contribution of The Department:

  • Diploma course in Kokborok & Research in Kokborok Grammer, the major tribal language of Tripura was started by the Bengali Department. (Now Kokborok is being taught in a separate Department).
  • Research works being carried out on Regional History, Culture & Literature of Tripura
  • Research work in the Different area of Literary Studies.
